Company history

Established in 1829 in Fremantle Western Australia, Lionel Samson and Son started as a merchant trading in beer, wine and spirits. The business grew strongly and by 1844 Lionel Samson had become a leading merchant in the import and export of sheep, cattle, horses, dried fish and sandalwood to Mauritius, Singapore and China. It's trade with England flourished with the import of beers and spirits.

In 1853, Lionel Samson with the assistance of George Walpole and Lionel's son Michael, formed the company now known as Lionel Samson and Son.

In the 1880's Lionel Samson was the single largest importer of beers and spirits from J.Jeffrey Brewers, Charles Ashby Brewers, Samuel Alsop Brewers, Gilbey Wines and Spirits. It was an agent for Richard Johnson, Nephew - Iron Masters and wire drawers. By 1898, Lionel Samson's business grew as merchants supplying the West Australian gold rush where it benefitted considerably by this growth in business. In 1939, Lionel Samson acquired a majority interest in RC Sadleir Pty Ltd established in 1895 who were customs agents and general carriers. The Sadleirs Group today are major national and international freight forwarders and general carriers by road and rail.

Lionel Samson merchant trading has grown to be a leading West Australian company conducting business in a  full range of industrial plastic packaging, heavy industrial packaging, heavy woven bulk bags through its company Storsack Pty Ltd and its partner GREIF Corporation, of USA. As a wholesale wine and beer distributor through the Lionel Samson Casama Alliance (Casama Group partnership) and in 1999, purchased its final interest in Plantagenet Wines Pty Ltd, a fine wine maker, with established vineyards in the Great Southern.
